Some dogs come into your life quietly. Diego arrived like a plot twist.
We had just landed back home from a work trip to San Diego when we went straight from the airport to the breeder. At the time, we were actually planning to meet his sister. But the moment Diego locked eyes with us, that plan disappeared. He chose us just as much as we chose him. Naming him Diego felt inevitable. He’s a reminder of that trip, that timing, and the moment everything changed.
Born on Christmas Eve, Diego has always felt like a gift we didn’t know we needed.
From day one, his personality was unmistakable. Diego is deeply sensitive, incredibly attached, and full of energy that never seems to run out. He has a big heart and even bigger feelings. He’s anxious when we’re away, happiest when everyone is home, and always on alert to make sure his crew is together. A true herder at heart, he thrives on routine, connection, and knowing where his people are at all times.
Playtime is his love language. Whether it’s chasing toys, sprinting across open fields, or nudging us to move when we’ve been sitting too long, Diego keeps us active — even on days we don’t feel like it. He reminds us that movement matters, presence matters, and life is meant to be experienced, not rushed through.
Diego is also fiercely loyal and protective. He’s territorial, cautious with other dogs, and selective about who enters his world. It’s challenged us to be more intentional about training, socialization, schedules, and understanding his needs instead of forcing him into someone else’s idea of “normal.”
Caring for Diego made us realize how much goes into truly supporting a dog’s life: managing health routines, tracking appointments, remembering medications and supplements, planning adventures that fit his personality, and building consistency that helps him feel safe.
